Your opportunity

The market leading Litigation, Advisory and Settlement Team and sits within our Tax and Legal Service Line. We are looking to recruit ambitious graduates with an interest in tax disputes to join this dynamic and growing practice. You will have the opportunity to be involved in both indirect and direct tax disputes against HMRC for blue chip clients. This will include litigating before the Courts as well as being involved in Alternative Dispute Resolution (“ADR”) projects.

During the programme you will assist in all elements of the litigation process, including liaising with HMRC, HMRC’s Solicitor’s Office and the Courts as necessary and dealing with and managing appeals through the Tribunal and court system. In addition, where disputes are more suited to settlement by way of ADR, you will be involved in all aspects of mediation, including drafting position papers as well as settlement agreements. You will also be expected to work with tax consulting colleagues including analysing case-law developments with a view to identifying business development opportunities. You will be actively encouraged to develop your own client relationships and really get to know clients’ businesses.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Tax appeals: drafting notice of appeal, applications, witness statements, skeleton arguments and other submissions, research into relevant statute and case-law, drafting instructions to Counsel, litigation hearing preparation, knowledge and application of Tribunal Rules and Civil Procedure Rules, dealing with Tribunal/higher courts/CJEU and HMRC’s solicitor’s office.
  • Other challenges to HMRC: judicial review proceedings including pre-action protocol, witness statements etc.
  • Alternative Dispute Resolution: drafting ‘ADR’ applications and position papers, legal research, scenario planning and providing general support throughout the ADR process. Potential opportunity to shadow and assist a mediator during a mediated meeting.
  • Advisory: drafting technical notes on case-law and statutory provisions as applied to client specific scenarios, analysing case-law trends and drafting update communications, and drafting instructions to Counsel and draft notes of conference. You may also be required to take part in internal presentations on case-law updates etc.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have completed the Legal Practice Course
  • Be a good team player who is organised and can demonstrate a strong attention to detail;
  • Have expertise in tax technical knowledge as well as detailed understanding of UK civil court procedure and process including that of the higher courts and the CJEU; administrative law and EU law;
  • Have a commercial outlook able to impact on the direction of the Team.
